Carnarvon Gorge National Park - Volunteer options available now:
Carnarvon Gorge National Park is looking for some help from one or two volunteers during their busy periods being October-November 2011 and January-February 2012 (ie. two month periods is preferred but one month is possible).
They want somebody who is personable, flexible, self sufficient, physically capable, and perhaps a little extroverted to assist with the following work:
- Visitor Centre front desk assistance (8-10am and 2-5pm or all day during school holidays)
- Visitor surveying
- Mist flower removal
Induction/training will be done by rangers. Especially to cover staff/volunteer standards (eg. code of conduct), emergency policies and procedures, library and computer use.
Depending on who you are, we will try to tailor this role to one’s strengths and skills. And if appropriate, this may evolve into more campground hosting type work.
You will be welcome to stay at the barracks (single beds, cupboards, reverse cycle air, kitchen with fridges, stove/oven, tv). The rangers do food runs every two weeks to get supplies. But generally everybody is responsible for their own food.
If this type of work interests you in any way or know somebody who might be able to help, please call Anna Tran from National Parks Association of Queensland on 07 3367 0878 or email atran@npaq.org.au Volunteers need to be confirmed with the park rangers as soon as possible.
Outback Links - Travel with a Purpose:
Outback Links needs volunteers who can provide families living in isolated locations across outback Australia with a helping hand. Volunteers perform a variety of jobs such as gardening, fencing, and plumbing, assistance with computers, book-keeping, truck driving and even looking after children while parents work. Volunteers have the opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of remote families. At the same time, participating families get a lot out of having an extra set of hands on deck. Many Outback Links volunteers combine their travel in outback Australia with a short volunteer placement. One campervan owner who volunteered with Outback Links dubbed it 'travel with a purpose'. The program is a part of Frontier Services, the major provider of aged care, health and community services, and pastoral support to people in outback and remote Australia.
