Ungarie is located in the central west region 200 kilometres from Wagga Wagga. The Ungarie district is in the largest cereal-growing centre in NSW. Ungarie is a quiet rest area with a small population of around 400 people.
Ungarie was established as a postal distribution point. By 1892 the settlement comprised a post office, a hotel, two general stores, a blacksmith shop, butchery and a boarding house. During the Second World War its steel works provided nuts and bolts for the defence force. In 1912, Ungarie became one of the foundation clubs of the Northern Riverina Football League (NRFL), with the town acquiring horizontal black and white stripes for its jumper and becoming the Ungarie Magpies. Over the next hundred years, the Ungarie Football Club fought through thick and thin to become the oldest current club in the competition.
With wide tree lined streets and easy parking, this quiet community is steeped in history. Aboriginal artefacts and hospital equipment are displayed at the Ungarie Museum, and an aeroplane crash site from WW2 is located on the outskirts of town. The current town of Ungarie includes a central school, a football/cricket ground, two tennis courts, two lawn bowls grounds, a swimming pool and a Catholic church. Popular attractions include the white elephant water tower, central pub and Ungarie football grounds.
Casual parking is available near the central business district on Lake Cargelligo Rd. Services include a community health centre, shopping, ATM facilities, bars and eateries. Short and long term parking (96hr) is permitted at Ungarie Showground (gold coin donation). Facilities include access to potable water and a dump point.
