Halfway across Australia on the Eyre Highway ‘as the crow flies’, Kimba is home to 1,100 people, a fascinating historical museum, the widely renowned ‘Big Galah’ and the award winning unique Community Hotel, featuring the Pine ‘n Pug country style gifts gallery.
Pastoral leases were first granted around Kimba in 1872 and the first crops sown in 1908, leading to the district's reputation today as one of South Australia's major grain belts. Kimba is now a thriving community with most modern facilities, including two supermarkets, two banks, a laundromat, Internet at the community library, a hospital, comprehensive health services and a variety of accommodation and mechanical services.
Kimba is the Eastern Gateway to the spectacular Gawler Ranges, a 100 kilometres drive north-west, offering visitors the chance to experience the open spaces and solitude of the outback. Gawler Ranges Visitor Information Bay on Railway Terrace is a uniquely designed structure displaying directions and features of the Gawler Ranges National Park.
The Visitor Information Centre, situated in Cross Street, is open seven days a week and their friendly volunteers are always happy to greet and guide visitors. Kimba is involved in the Grey Nomads program and enquiries can be made at the Centre.
Kimba and Gawler Ranges Historical Museum is a unique and popular attraction, located opposite the grain silos on the Eyre Highway. Open four days per week or by appointment, phone 08 8627 2131. Nearby is the novel Halfway Across Australia sign and The Big Galah, which stands eight metres tall in front of the Halfway Across Australia Gem Shop on the Eyre Highway.
The Roora Walking Trail on the northern edge of town culminates at Whites Knob Lookout, and the Moseley Nobs Walking Trail, approximately 25 kilometres north of Kimba, is a stimulating walk through rolling hills.
Kimba welcomes visitors and encourages them to spend time in the town and the surrounding areas.
