Karoonda is 146 kilometres east of Adelaide and 66 kilometres from Murray Bridge and is in the heart of the Mallee.
It is a small, pleasant rural town which is a service centre for the surrounding agricultural area that is noted for its fine sheep, and crops of wheat and barley. There is a showpiece railway museum, Pioneer Park and well-shaded picnic grounds in the town.
A meteorite which fell from the sky in 1930 is on display in the local council office.
The Karoonda Farm Fair is held on the last weekend of March or the first weekend in April.
