Avoca, TAS |
||
Avoca is a small village located at the junction of the St Pauls and South Esk Rivers. On the Esk Highway and 50 minutes drive from Launceston, it is the principal town in the Fingal Valley. The area was first settled in the 1830’s and farming, coal and tin mining took place. All the mines are now closed but it is still a farming area.
There are a number of historic buildings in the town. These include the St Thomas Anglican Church, which sits on the hill at the top of Blenheim Street, the Union Hotel and the parish hall, which is now used as a store. A great example of Georgian architecture is Bona Vista, a stone residence built around a courtyard with basement cells and a sandstone terrace.
Stop in at the Billy Bag Gift Shop, with its shelves full of unusual and interesting things and the full size animals gazing into the shop. If you want to stop for a picnic, there is a lovely park in the centre of town and an attractive riverside park.
Stop at the Shell Road House in Falmouth Street for Visitor Information when you visit this pretty and charming riverside village.
