Motorhoming poets

How the Griffiths met the Ormsbys

We were heading north on the Stuart Highway,
When a voice on our CB says, “Hey, what does it mean…this CMCA?”

“Why, Carry My Chair Around,” I replied with a snigger,
Then thought I’d better tell him, it’s the Campervan and Motorhome Club of Australia.

The voice says, “Thanks mate, I have never heard of it before,”
Then his wife (Janet) plants the foot, while he (Clarence) hangs tightly to the door.

We toured around the top end, seeing, gorges, crocs and hot springs,
Got back down to Katherine where travellers stocked up with all things.

It was here we saw the Winnebago, so I rocked on over and said “Hey,
Aren’t you the bloke who called us on the CB radio that day?”

After a bit of chat, we discovered they too were heading west,
And blow me down, that night they also pulled up at Big Horse Creek, for a rest.

Next morning Clarence gives us a CD, a tribute to Janet, his loving wife,
We’d given them a ‘Wanderer’ in Katherine so they could learn of motorhoming life.

We lost them at Lake Argyle;, where we decided to stay,
Didn’t see the Winne again, until Broome, in the Info Centre Parking Bay.

Gave him a buzz on the mobile, only to hear him say,
They were heading to Barn Hill Station, now, on this very same day.

No sooner had we arrived, (at Barn Hill Station) when Janet says “near us there’s a spare park”,
Then Clarence has the idea, he’ll come and sing to us at the farm, ‘David Park’.

After this we met up a lot. De Grey River, Port Hedland, Shark Bay,
(We took many a wildflower shot), then Coronation Beach and New Norcia way.

Then came the rally, Western Willie Wagtails at Wongan Hills,
The first CMCA ‘do’ for our new friends, where Clarence and Janet were a hit.

Here they wooed them, as they had done at Barn Hill Station,
Next they entertained for the Melbourne Cup, you know, that race that stops a nation.

Now it’s April 2008, Janet and Clarence have travelled to our Kingsthorpe farm,
About 73 motorhomes, 150 people, and it’s our turn to experience their charm.

On behalf of the Darling Downs Drifters, we thank you for coming to our sunny state,
For the Anzac Day service, entertainment, and for keeping us up so late.

Thank you Janet and Clarence. Travel safely.
