The People You Meet
We started this travelling caper a few short years ago.
Sold our home, started to roam, here and there, to and fro.
One of the best things we have found,
As we travel round and round
Is not just the scenery we say
But the people we meet along the way.
We all exchange stories jokes and recipes
And we share the gift of friendship as we sit among the trees.
Maybe just relaxing in the outback is their wish
Or camped by a River catching lots of fish.
Sitting back relaxing - not glancing at our watch,
But out the corner of our eye fellow travellers we do watch.
Not glaring or staring, just merely observing.
The activities of some can be quite unnerving.
Especially when parking vehicles in a van park
Squeezing into tiny sites can be quite a lark.
It has been the scene of many 'domestics'
As nerves are frayed as things get quite hectic.
The hand signals become more frantic, and hard to read,
But the van park owner’s wife will often take the lead.
"Listen luv, just leave it to the men folk - you just pay a visit to the loo"
"Then if it’s not straight or level, or something else is wrong, he can’t blame you."
Then there’s Dave the Preacher who lives in his car.
He spreads the word of the Lord to all both near and far.
For those in the know who see him coming
You won’t see for dust as they take off running.
And there is Fred and his wife, and dog named Jim.
He firmly believes 'No camping' signs don’t apply to him.
Another memorable time we had was out near Coober Pedy.
When the Priest Father P.J. found himself needy.
Vehicle breakdown meant he and his dog Scott
Were stuck overnight in our little camp spot.
So we shared our food and drinks, and stories of luck
And the next morning they were transported on a tow truck.
How lucky we are in this great land
To know that fellow travellers will always lend a hand.
But of course the campfire sessions are the best by far.
So much more relaxed after opening the bar.
The liquid tends to relax the vocal chords
As we sing to our hearts content and make up a few words,
Which causes a great deal of fun and laughter.
These memories we will keep forever after.
Thank you to the people we have met along the way.
We look forward to meeting many more each and every day.
