Baby Boomers

Baby Boomers

About this time last year, or thereabouts, following a bout of recurring physical injuries, old and new, we were considering moving into an apartment on the Gold Coast and going into semi-retirement (but, hold on, Colleen has been retired for going on five years already. Oh well that's the male species lot I suppose) when we saw on TV the program on the Grey Nomads. After watching the exploits of the people on this show we decided that it might be a bit of fun and excitement to emulate the Grey Nomads and spend our children's inheritance on a motorhome and tour our vast and to us mostly unseen great country.

A lot of our friends said, “Why don't you go overseas”? “Why” we replied, “we haven't seen our own country yet”!

So the looking and examining of different types of motorhomes began. Looking in the papers, magazines, brochures, on the Internet and of course visiting motorhome outlets such as Australian Motor Homes at Bennetts Green in Newcastle and Swagman Motor Homes at Biggera Waters Queensland.

We did not realise that there was such a variety of motorhomes available, some with every conceivable modern comfort of a traditional home but with the versatility of mobility.

It was also of comfort to know that there was a Club - the CMCA that one could join and obtain valuable assistance in selecting the right type of motorhome, information and accessories etc and to meet fellow travellers.

After much deliberation and sometimes heartache we decided that the time was right for us to go on this adventure whilst we were still physically capable and able of enjoying the trek.

Also we took into consideration that our immediate family is strung out across three states of Australia, our eldest daughter lives here in Newcastle (for the time being she says), our son lives in country Victoria and our youngest daughter lives in far north Queensland. The mobility of a mobile home would give us the opportunity to see our children and grandchildren at more regular intervals, We have no doubts that we will be house-minding our children's homes for a couple of months each year.

The next step was to engage a reputable financial adviser to assess our income stream if we took on this adventure. The financial adviser's assessment was acceptable to our needs. The business was put up for sale, followed by the family home and we purchased a 28' Swagman Signature from Australian Motor Homes in Bennetts Green, Newcastle NSW.

We cannot express enough thanks and gratitude for the assistance, up front advice and consideration given to us by Ron and his friendly team (love the coffee) at Australian Motor Homes Bennetts Green and - without qualification, the same sentiments can be bestowed on the team at Swagman at Biggera Waters, Queensland. The service these people have given us has been outstanding. From visiting us at the Broadwater Tourist Park (Gold Coast) to see that everything was OK with the Swagman to transporting us to the Motor Registry for registration of the RV.
