A Word of Caution – Avoiding Scams
If you are contacted via email in regards to your Members Market ad, or any other ad you have placed online, please make sure that the person is a genuine buyer.
You need to be wary of buyers who:
- are asking you to send money, goods or vehicles overseas
- are requesting payment through a wire transfer service (such as Western Union Money Transfer, MoneyGram or goldmoney.com) as these are considered unsecure and unsafe methods of payment
- will not provide contact details and/or their emails are poorly written or demonstrate limited English
- advise that a pick-up agent requires payment from you.
If you suspect an email is a scam please do the following:
- do not respond to the email and make no further contact with the buyer
- NEVER respond with personal details, bank account or Paypal details
- report the scam at the government website Scamwatch
Some other useful tips when selling your motorhome:
- ask that the buyer wait for any cheques to clear before they take away your pride and joy
- don't send out your bank account details without being absolutely sure that you are dealing with a genuine buyer, if unsure ask for a face to face meeting and suitable identification documents
- although Paypal is a legitimate payment method, some scammers pray on the fact that many people view Paypal as a secure payment method. They may send fake emails that appear to be from Paypal, so please remember that neither Paypal, nor your bank, would ever send you an email asking for your account details.
