High Tech Generators: Safety Tips for Generators

None of these tips are new! However, these common problems top the list year after year.

1. Operating generators in wet conditions. Never operate a generator that has been sitting in water following a storm or minor flood event. Water in contact with electrically charged components can transmit electricity to the frame and other surfaces.

2. Refuelling while the engine is running or still hot. Still the number one cause of accidents with petrol generators!

3. Use of damaged extension leads. Extension leads with damaged outer insulation will absorb moisture when exposed to rain or early morning dews. Handling a wet, damaged lead can lead to electric shock or electrocution.

4. Storing a generator in the boot of a car on hot days. A petrol generator in the boot on a hot day can cause fuel vapours from expanding fuel. Also, a full fuel tank in this situation will leak from the fuel cap if the air vent on the fuel cap has not been closed.

5. Running generators in poorly ventilated areas. Petrol engines produce toxic carbon monoxide exhaust fumes - a silent killer in a poorly ventilated area.

High Tech Generators: Beware 12 Volt Charging Socket on Inverter Generators

The experts at High Tech Generators have issued the following explanation on the limitations of using the 12 volt charging socket on inverter generators:

The 12 volt charging socket on inverter generators is designed to charge only 12v lead acid batteries and is intended only for emergency use. The charging output is rated at only 8amp per hour with the generator running at full revs. It would take a long time to charge a dead flat battery!

Another limitation with generator battery charging is the lack of a regulation devise or instrument read out to indicate when the battery is fully charged. If the charger is not disconnected when the battery is close to fully charged, there is a risk of destroying a very expensive battery.

The experts at HTG strongly recommend a good quality multistage 240v battery charger. They point out these chargers can be run from the AC sockets of generators.

Argyle Batteries & Solar: New Premises - Ten Times the Size

We often hear of businesses moving because they have outgrown their premises.  However, new premises which are ten times the size of the previous premises makes a major statement about confidence in the future.

Kieran Forrest, Argyle Batteries & Solar, said that although the move was made last Melbourne Cup Day, the expansion is not a gamble.

Kieran said, “The premises have a main road frontage – Adelaide Road in Murray Bridge – with a rear driveway to provide a drive-through service. Drivers of motorhomes and other heavy vehicles appreciate being able to drive in, park undercover while work on their vehicle is in progress and then drive out the rear entrance”.

As well as expanding the battery side of the business, Kieran said a major expansion of the solar and solar accessories division is under way.

Commenting on the expansion of the battery business, Kieran said, “Our volume sales ensure low prices and great freight pricing, meaning that despite the weight of batteries, we can deliver at competitive prices all over Australia”.

Kieran quoted a recent sale at over $200,000 to a group of nine outback stations!

Australian Nomad Technologies: Satellite Phone Subsidy

ANT’s Premium Satellite Phone Service now qualifies for the Federal Government Satellite Phone Subsidy; satellite phones may be the only form of telephone communications available when travelling regional and remote Australia. To qualify, approval must be obtained prior to purchasing the kit.

ANT provides portable Broadband Internet (via satellite) and is your ISP. ANT also offers a dedicated bandwidth Premium Satellite Phone Service over VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) for an additional charge.

The ANT Premium Satellite Phone Service is accessible even when your computer is off, however, you must be connected to the internet. The ANT Premium Satellite Phone Service has a dedicated Voice Box into which the telephone handset is plugged.  Voicemail is also available. Your 'home' phone number can be taken on your travels.

The ANT Premium Satellite Phone Service has been specifically configured to use over satellite. As it is an over satellite service, a lag of approximately one second occurs.   VoIP over satellite is a simplex service, so only one person can talk at a time.  However, the alternative may be no mobile coverage – no phone or internet!

Excelsior Power: Combined Sine Wave Inverter, Smart Charger and Solar Regulator

The new Super ICISS range offers an all-in-one simple solution to providing power for motorhomes. It combines sine wave inverters, smart chargers, and solar regulators. The battery chargers (depending on model) are up to 140amp capacity and combine with a larger 40amp solar regulator.

As well as a second dedicated charger for start batteries, the range features generator/site power boosting for occasions when generator or site power isn’t enough for high surge demands. An Automatic Transfer Switch switches between site power and inverter. When site or generator power is available, the inverter will transfer the load to this source. When this incoming power ceases, the switch transfers the load to the inverter. The cost and wiring of a transfer switch is saved.

These inverters have an intelligent remote control, combined with indicators for battery voltage, wattage, output voltage, and error conditions.

As these inverters have a large surge ratio they can run units with high start up loads, air conditioners being a prime example.

Available in two sizes, SUPER ICISS2000 and SUPER ICISS4000, for 12volt or 24volt.

Suncraft Customised Bed Sheets: Fresh Sheets for the Night

One of the joys of life is to feel fresh sheets as you hop into bed. This joy increases a notch when the new sheets are custom made for the odd shaped bed in your motorhome – and the previous night you fought with sheets which didn’t fit the bed.

You can order custom made sheets for mattresses of an odd shape with a template produced by tracing along the curve. Recently some motorhomers discovered another way of obtaining the perfect sheets – they contacted Michele at Suncraft Customised Bed Sheets and made an appointment. They arrived in the morning, left their motorhome with Michele while they went off for a tour, and returned to find the sheets made and fitted to their bed.

The motorhomers were very impressed, especially as the top sheet was zipped to the bottom sheet - the zip went across the feet end.

Many colours are available, sheeting is commercial quality Marco Polo 50/50 poly cotton, 170 gsm while the white is 100% cotton.

Michele is happy to 'make your bed' in a single day, but obviously a booking has to be made!

Honda Australia: 100 Million Honda Units

You look at your Honda generator and try to comprehend that it is one of 100 million units produced by Honda since it commenced its power product business back in 1953.

Honda commenced its long-lived power equipment manufacturing business with the launch of an engine for agricultural equipment. Since then, Honda has utilised its core technology, the engine, to gradually expand its power products lineup to include products such as tillers, generators, outboard engines, pumps, lawnmowers, and snowblowers.

At the forefront of environmental technology, Honda is working toward the realisation of a low-carbon society. In recent years the company has been proactive in developing products in the areas of energy conservation and creation. As a result, Honda has increased the diversity of its power products lineup which now includes a compact household gas engine cogeneration unit, and a solar power system which adopts CIGS thin-film solar cells.

Today, Honda power products are produced at 11 production plants in nine countries, including Australia, and are used regularly by people in more than 150 countries.

Silentwind: Wind Generator Powers Coffee Machine

A German couple, who are CMCA Members with a motorhome in Australia, fly over each year for a six week tour. They were fascinated with the wind power generators on yachts in Germany.

They found that the 260 watt solar panels on their motorhome were not able to fully charge their 200 Amp batteries. They also decided they preferred to park in the shade.

They researched wind generators and bought a Silentwind, less-than-one-minute to position the Silentwind for operation or lowering for travelling was the clincher. They were also impressed that the generator slows down when the batteries are fully charged.

The wind generator proved a great success: free camping, parking in the shade, and full batteries – what more could motorhomers want? A decent cup of coffee is the answer! So, they bought a 1,500 watt inverter and a coffee machine. They then found they had sufficient power for other 240V appliances.

The couple report another bonus – in addition to charging their batteries 24 hours a day, the Silentwind attracts lots of attention – they get to meet and chat with fellow motorhomers!

Bainbridge Technologies: 'Dynamic Duo' Power Solution

Bainbridge Technologies and CTEK provide the 'Dynamic Duo' - the CTEK D250S Dual DC-DC Smart Charger integrated with the CTEK SMARTPASS Complete Power Management Unit. This combination gives batteries a faster charge, a fuller charge, more power, and a longer lifespan.

The CTEK D250S Dual DC-DC Smart Charger maintains and conditions start and service batteries with alternator power while travelling and/or solar power when stopped.

The CTEK SMARTPASS Complete Power Management Unit manages and optimally distributes alternator, solar and wind power. It directs regulated energy where needed, boosts alternator output and minimises charge time.

With the integrated SMARTPASS / D250S Dual System, the SMARTPASS manages the energy transfer through the D250S Dual which then converts and produces the optimal voltage of 14.4V, even if the alternator produces only 14V or less.

As an integrated system, the SMARTPASS acts as a voltage controlled relay, initially passing high charge currents through to get the service battery charged up quickly.  When the service battery voltage equals starter battery voltage (less than 20A), charging automatically switches back to the more versatile D250S Dual.

Isuzu: Motorhome – Home, Office and Transport

The usual answer to the question, "what’s stopping you from going full-time?” is, “I need a source of income!”

Warren Mills, who established a business in 1997 to provide compliance management systems and related training to the automotive industry, often has to travel days to reach customers in rural Australia.

To support the gruelling travel demands of his business, he built a lift-off campervan on the back of an Isuzu NPS 300 cab chassis. Warren also built the campervan with a second purpose in mind – outback touring with his family.

Warren said, “It’s advantageous to have a lift-off body because when detached the camper sits much lower to the ground. This is more convenient when staying at a campsite. It’s also convenient that we can drive the truck without carting the campervan along with it.”

Warren said the Isuzu NPS 300 was a worthy choice for his campervan project.

He said, “The truck has a manual transmission – the ratios are very well spaced. I tend to travel just under 100 kilometres an hour. We crossed the Nullarbor recently and found the Isuzu drives very easily with reasonable fuel consumption."

Isuzu: 23 Years of Truck Market Leadership

Isuzu Trucks has continued its extraordinary run as Australian truck market leader after recording its 23rd consecutive year atop the sales charts at the end of 2011.

Official T-mark industry reports reveal Isuzu Trucks finished in 2011 with a total of 6,617 units sold and a market share of almost 24% – 3,283 units and 11.8% share ahead of its nearest competitor.

Isuzu dominated the light duty segment finishing with 37.6% share and 3,320 units more than the combined market share and volume of the second and third-placed manufacturers.

Isuzu also comfortably lead medium duty truck sales with 40.7% market share with a total of 2,553 units. This performance left Isuzu over 17% clear of its closest competitor in terms of market share along with a volume buffer of 1,072 units.

The brand also performed admirably in the heavy duty market – its 7.9% market share and volume of 744 units confirmed Isuzu’s position as Australia’s favourite heavy duty Japanese manufacturer.

Coastal Caravan & RV Accessories: Electric Brakes on Trailers

Warren Macey of Coastal Caravan & RV Accessories says his fully equipped workshop can install, service and repair electrical brakes on trailers.

Warren referred us to the NSW RTA website to gain some appreciation of the regulations concerning trailers.

The following has been gleaned:

All trailers with a Gross Trailer Mass (GTM) exceeding 750kg and first registered after 30 June 1990 are required to be fitted with an efficient braking system. For trailers with a GTM of up to 2 tonnes, this braking system can be either an overrun system or one that is operated from the driver's seat. For trailers with a GTM exceeding 2 tonnes, the braking system must be capable of being applied from the driver’s seat - overrun brakes are not acceptable. In addition, the braking system must be such that if the trailer accidentally breaks away (from the towing vehicle), the trailer brakes will apply automatically and remain applied for at least 15 minutes.

Dentist In a Box: 6.3% of Total Health Spend is Dental

Dr John of Dentist In a Box reports that last year the national expenditure on dental services was $7.7 billion (6.3% of total health spend). Dr John further reports the link between oral health and chronic diseases such as diabetes and heart disease in the adult population is well known in medical circles.

Dr John said, “The cost of dental treatment is significant. The best approach is for people to have regular dental check-ups - prevention makes good health sense as well as good financial sense!”

Dr John advises motorhomers travelling for extended periods away from cities or large regional areas to consider dental check-ups in their travel plans.

A dental first aid kit would seem to be an essential part of motorhoming equipment.

Dentist In a Box is a dental first aid kit designed by Dr John.

Dr John said that his first aid kit for dental problems is Australian made, using the highest quality, hospital-grade materials. It provides temporary, immediate and effective relief from the inconvenience and suffering of unexpected dental problems. It's drug-free, acting locally to minimise side-effects.

Explorer Motorhomes: Suspension and GVM Upgrade

Here is a happy hour question, 'A motorhome can be built on any chassis – yes or no?'

Many of us might be thinking, 'yes' until we hear one of those 'technical types' around the campfire whisper 'suspension and GVM' to his mate. Then we decide 'no' is probably going to be the correct answer.

We ask the 'third umpire', John Burke, owner of Explorer Motorhomes based in Queensland, for his answer.

John goes for a bit of 'yes' and 'no' but settles for 'no' on the basis that the question means 'a chassis in a factory delivered condition (not modified)'.

John elaborates, "Explorer Motorhomes now include a full suspension and GVM (Gross Vehicle Mass) upgrade to 3,300kg on the new 2012 'SR' model Toyota Hilux 4WD, diesel, auto or manual - fully approved by the Federal Government Department, DOTARS".

Suspension upgrade includes rear springs, rear shocks, front struts and front shocks - handling of the fibreglass Explorer is superb.

The 'factory' GVM of Hilux 4WD of 2,835kg is upgraded to 3,300kg, giving the Explorer Motorhome owners an extra 465kg carrying capacity.

All included in the standard price.

Explorer Motorhomes: Beware of Illegal Motorhomes

John Burke, owner of Explorer Motorhomes, advises people contemplating the purchase of a motorhome to gain an understanding of GVM (Gross Vehicle Mass).

The GVM of a vehicle is the mass of the vehicle that cannot be legally exceeded. If a vehicle is on a public road with a GVM in excess of its legal GVM, then the insurance is void and the police will immediately put the vehicle off the road. These two consequences are obviously disastrous for vehicle owners but the second consequence, 'police will immediately put the vehicle off the road', raises the accommodation question for motorhomers!

John said the discussion on GVM is 'not theoretical' – there are motorhomes, currently on Australian roads, which exceed their legal GVMs.

John said, "Explorer Motorhomes upgrades the 'factory' GVM of Hilux 4WD of 2,835kg to 3,300kg, giving the Explorer Motorhome owners an extra 465kg carrying capacity. This allows for options such as a bull bar, tow bar, larger fuel tank, more solar panels, large capacity water tanks and larger fridge."

KEA Campers:  Launch of KEA Craft Series

Specifically designed for the retail market, the KEA Craft Series met with approval from the New Zealand market after being unveiled at the Auckland Motorhome Show in September. KEA is planning to launch the Craft Series in Australia in early 2012.

Several new models will be launched, the first being the 6.2 metre KEA Origin. Based on KEA’s original 6 metre 4 berth motorhome of 2000-2004, the Origin will feature swivel driver and passenger seats, walk-through internal access, four seat belts and KEA’s trademark panoramic tinted windows. The Origin’s compact size means it’s easy to drive and park while offering a versatile space for couples or families.

KEA’s National Vehicle Sales Manager, Norman Roe, said “The original KEA floorplan proved so popular that we’re still frequently asked about them and they still fetch a good price as trade-ins. We’re listening to the market and bringing back this old favourite with a fresh modern twist.”

The introduction of the KEA Craft Series brand is part of an overall brand refinement which will see further product lines introduced in the near future.

Specialised Awnings Australia: Snapon Awning Protector

It is a sad fact that many RV awnings suffer the most damage in the rolled-up state – especially those awnings which spend most of their lives rolled-up. The damage is caused by sun, weather, and abrasions!

Specialised Awnings Australia has come to the rescue with a protective sleeve which simply snaps on over the closed awning, offering maximum protection.

The Snapon Awning Protector is made from a UV resistant polymer. The 'C' shaped protector is designed to fit all roll-out awnings. The protectors feature a flanged end to ensure smooth connection with the next link as each section is ‘snapped’ onto the rolled up awning.

A unique feature of the Snapon Awning Protector is the top leading edge extending from the roll-up awning barrel to touch the side wall of your RV, thus ensuring total protection.

The Snapon Awning Protector kit is an inexpensive and cost-effective RV product, especially when the cost of a replacement vinyl fabric (skin) for your awning is added to the equation!

The Snapon Awning Protector comes as a packaged kit – simply provide the length of your awning when you order.

Suncamper Motorhomes: New Website Launched

'More photos, more information and more specifications' is the promise on the home page of the new Suncamper Motorhomes’ website.

The 'more information and more specifications' promise is kept as soon as the website is entered. The nine Suncamper Motorhomes are compared in a side by side table. If you can get your choice down to two or three models, simply 'click' the other six and your three preferred motorhomes remain side by side. This is a great feature – much better than having the relevant three brochures side by side on the kitchen table!

Talking about 'brochures' – each of the motorhomes featured under the sections of plan, specs, features, and photos. After examining these sections the only questions you would have for Suncamper are how much and when can we take delivery!

As you would now anticipate, the website has used build and about Suncamper pages.

Well worth a visit – make sure you have a coffee when you enter the website – you’ll be there for a while.

Coast to Coast RV Services: Carefree Electric Eclipse Awning

Put the awning out for a morning cuppa stop? Too much trouble for a short stop?

The Carefree Electric Eclipse Awning is a 12 volt awning that operates at the touch of a button. The awing can be unwound partially or to the full eight foot extension. The awing, when extended, is very stable; as the worm-gear motor unwinds the canopy, the arms glide up the vertical track, providing truss-like support.

The Eclipse is available in Silver Fade in sizes from 14ft – 18ft (in1ft increments).

Eclipse features include self levelling, rain-dump (when the Eclipse is on a flat pitch and rain is pooling on the canopy, the gas strut will momentarily retract to dump the water), adjustable pitch (six settings on the awning arm providing maximum shelter from the sun and rain).

Coast to Coast advises Carefree awnings are sold as two components, the vinyl and the hardware (or arms). Hardware required will vary depending on size and type of RV. A Coast to Coast staff member can advise the correct hardware to suit your motorhome.

RRP starts at $2,169 (including GST).

Eniquest, formerly Watts2c: Kyocera Solar Panels Pass Official Test

Happy Hour question: “How can you ensure a solar panel will last a long time?”

Answer: “You can ensure a solar panel will last a long time if it has passed a TUV Rheinaland’s independent long term sequential test (TUV Rheinaland provide independent national and international certification testing services to around 80% of all solar panel manufacturers).

Martin Hygemann, Communications Manager for Eniquest, said Kyocera solar panels have passed this test and also have a proven performance at the Desert Knowledge Australia site.

Martin further commented on the TUV Rheinaland test, “The new long term sequential test methodology simulates environmental factors such as temperature, wind, hail, salt mist, dust, sand, rain, dew, frost and fog that lead to degradation of solar panels over time. This test provides a more accurate indication of the performance of a solar panel under real world environmental conditions.

Martin said that Kyocera 135W solar panels at under $600 is value for money.

Hobart Showground Motorhome Park: Recently re-grassed

Peter Derkley of the Hobart Showground Motorhome Park said the Parks close proximity to the Hobart CBD make it an ideal tourist hub, especially for those with big rigs and pets. Peter also said the Park has been recently re-grassed in preparation for the inundation of CMCA travellers who use the Hobart Showground as their base for touring Southern Tasmania.

Some of the destinations motorhomers love to see around Hobart are the historic Richmond Village, Salamanca in the waterfront area and home of the famous Salamanca Market, the big hill (Mount Wellington that overlooks Hobart), Port Arthur and the Tasmania Peninsular. Sunday morning the Showground comes alive as the sun comes up with the opening of the Hobart Showground Sunday Market and various other Showground events.

RV Options Australia: 'Site Reservation Sign'

You’ve found the best camping spot in a van park or motorhome parking area – and set up camp. Next morning you want to go touring for a few hours before returning to your 'base'.

How do you reserve your spot? Leave your expensive table and chairs or perhaps move the nearby rubbish bin onto the spot? Neither really reserve your spot – they can easily be moved. Worse still, your table and chairs could disappear.

The simple answer could be a professionally made 'Site Reservation Sign', personalised with your motorhome registration number! The 20cm x 20cm signs are screen printed with a highly visible red over white Colorbond and with a panel for your vehicle registration number to be added with texta pen. The signs are designed for easy storage in the motorhome and come complete with a 30cm plastic stake to fit into the ground.
